The paper reviews the basic elements of the Norwegian polar-physics research program in Svalbard, which is carried out in the framework of the Geospace Environment Modeling program. It is shown why Svalbard is a unique place for observing geomagnetic and auroral processes in the polar cusp. Recommendations on future investigations of the polar cusp at Svalbard are presented.
