The distribution of dense molecular clouds in M31 is studied, applying a combination of visual inspection and digital image-processing techniques to a photocopy of an image from the Hubble Atlas (Sandage, 1961). The analytical methods employed are outlined, and results are presented in graphs. The number of dark clouds per square kpc is found to vary periodically with distance along the major axis, suggesting that the filling factor used in the standard M31 cloud model may be an upper limit.
