We ask for 120ks of XMM/EPIC time on a unique z=0.359 source which shows in the X-rays an unprecedented redshifted, variable in energy, absorption iron line, plus an iron emission line, forming an inverted P-Cygni profile. In the optical, two sources, within ~2.5 kpc, are embedded in the same galaxy. One of them is the best candidate to date for being a recoiling SMBH with both spectroscopic and imaging signatures, in a recently merged system. Chandra/HRC imaging and HST/STIS data, recently awarded, will help to understand if CID-42 is a GW recoiling SMBH or a slingshot recoiling SMBH in a triple SMBH system. The XMM/EPIC spectrum will constrain column density, velocity and ionization state of the absorbing gas, and link the nature of the X-ray absorption line with the nature of this source.
