We propose to observe three fields for 80 ks each in the supergiant shell SMC-SGS 1 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. These observations will result in a superb X-ray image of the entire SGS, yield the physical parameters of the hot plasma and uncover the discrete sources. Combined with our multiwavelength analysis of stars and gas in the SGS, the new XMM-Newton data will allow us to investigate the energy balance in the SGS and establish a better understanding of the structure and evolution of the ISM on galactic scales.
