Geomagnetic induction problems are studied on a reduced scale with aluminium conductors to represent conducting matter within the earth. The inducing field is produced by a rectangular coil, 100 cm long and 200 × 186 cm in cross-section, energized by a power amplifier with frequencies between 40 Hz and 1 kHz. The aluminium conductors are placed below the coil. The sum of both inducing and induced magnetic fields is scanned between coil and conductors, the three components being measured with pick-up coils. After amplification amplitudes and phase angles are plotted on an xy-recorder. Three scale models have been investigated: (1) an aluminium plate; (2) an aluminium plate with an overlying cylinder; and (3) an aluminium plate, partly covered with a thin aluminium sheet. The last model simulates the edge effect between oceans sand continents.
