The dynamical response of a subcrustal phase transition to pressure perturbations is reexamined and a model for the response of a univariant phase-transition boundary to pressure perturbations is formulated. Analytical solutions of the problem show that the phase boundary is discontinuous if the velocity of the boundary is less than a critical value, whereas at higher speeds a two-phase region exists. The relaxation motion of the phase boundary due to thermal diffusion is examined in both cases and the implications for Postglacial land upheaval processes are discussed. Moreover a solution of the equation which might be relevant for the formation of very thick sediment layers is studied. In agreement with observations it is found that under certain specified conditions the sediments will form at a constant water depth.
