The amplitude of the diurnal variation at Legon, Ghana (5°38'N, 0°11'W) during the I.Q.S.Y. is found to be 43 per cent of its value during the I.G.Y. and the mean direction of the telluric current field is 23°W instead of 15°W during the I.G.Y. The character of the diurnal variation during the winter solstice (particularly January and February) is found to be quite different from that observed during the rest of the year. Evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that the major source of the telluric current field near the magnetic equator is the equatorial electrojet.
