Interstellar Medium In And Around The Milky Way, Mopra

Scientific paper

We have recently identified in the CfA CO survey of the Galaxy a new spiral arm that had been sought and speculated about for over 50 years (Dame & Thaddeus 2008). Detailed analysis of the CfA survey and preliminary follow-up observations with Mopra last July have demonstrated that this arm is the symmetric far-side counterpart of the so-called "Expanding 3-kpc Arm" that was discovered in 21 cm emission in 1957. The detection of these twin expanding arms, probably emanating from either end of the Galaxy's central bar, provides strong confirmation of the bar and will allow better determination of its orientation and physical properties. Here we propose to double the area of our current Mopra map of the Far 3-kpc Arm in order to determine its overall structure and the properties of its component molecular clouds.
