Magnetic fields are expected to provide stability to high-velocity clouds (HVCs) interacting with the halo of the Milky Way. And yet, there is no conclusive detection of magnetic fields in an HVC. We have recently used rotation measures to find a tantalising suggestion of a 1-10 microgauss field in an HVC associated with the Magellanic system. We propose to follow-up this suggestion with HI Zeeman observations of the cloud to conclusively show whether or not there is a magnetic field and to measure its in situ strength. We therefore request 55 hours with the Parkes Radio Telescope to conduct the most promising measurement yet of a magnetic field in an HVC.
