We show that LISA should detect the ringdown radiation emitted by newly formed, oscillating massive black holes with large signal-to-noise ratio and measure the characteristic (quasi-normal) frequencies of the oscillations with great accuracy throughout the observable Universe, providing accurate estimates of the black holes' mass and angular momentum. Under reasonable assumptions LISA's signal-to-noise ratio should be large enough to allow tests of the Kerr nature of astrophysical black holes, i.e. tests of the no-hair theorem of general relativity.
