Many phenomena on the Sun, in the interplanetary and near Earth space play an important role in the solar-terrestrial system. An increasing number of studies indicate that variations in the solar activity (SA) may have significant impact on the atmosphere, spanning from the upper layers directly affected by space weatherthrough the stratospheric ozone layer down to the troposphere. The goal of this study is to identify possible impact of the SA on the main modes of atmospheric variability in the Northern Hemisphere and the Northern Atlantic region in particular. As a first step, we have analysed the statistical distribution of the indices describing the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) during various phases of the SA. We have used the daily NAO and monthly AO indices available from the NOAA Climate Center (CPC). The AO probability density functions (PDFs) are analysed on monthly and quarterly scales, while the NAO PDFs are analysed on weekly, monthly and quarterly scales.
