It has commonly been thought that in spacetimes with closed timelike curves, one cannot find consistent time evolutions of classical fields for generic initial data, i.e., that the Cauchy problem is not well defined. Here, a recently obtained proof is outlined which shows that there is a well-defined Cauchy problem for at least the simplest of the wormhole spacetimes of Friedman et al. (1990).
