For the past few years, a study has been undertaken of the possibility of forecasting heavy storm surges which regularly endanger the North Sea coast by using microseisms recorded with different kinds of geophysical instruments in Belgium. An instrument analyzing continuously the microseisms between 5 and 7 s from a long-period seismometer has been built for that purpose. It is concluded that the continuous analysis of microseisms is useful to trigger preliminary alarms for storm surges. A correlation between the meteorological conditions and the increase of microseisms is presented.
