Dusty matter in the Universe contributes little to the cosmic mass balance but plays an important rôle in galactic evolution. The interpretation of interstellar grains in the nm and μm range needs experimental simulations in the laboratory. In this article the short history of this new branch of astrophysical solid state physics, the latest results and future prospects are presented.
