A mechanism for the generation of electric waves in the mesosphere is proposed which involves the interaction of ascending convective currents of partially ionized air with charged aerosol particles. The mechanism is marked by an instability analogous to the beam-plasma instability, and can occur in sufficiently dense mesospheric clouds at relatively high velocities of the air ions and aerosols, greater than about 0.7 m/s. The electric-field amplitude in the generated wave can reach values at which a nonequilibrium electric discharge can arise.
