With the introduction of telecommunications in the previous century, science fiction conceived the matter transmitter: a device to analyze a living human, transmit electrically the analysis over long distances, and regenerate the living person in a receiver. In succeeding years various authors extended the concept to interplanetary and interstellar transmission. Hitherto, serious studies have dealt with the subject in a qualitative fashion. In this paper, several quantitative aspects of the matter transmitter are examined for the first time. Previous estimates of the information content of a human are reviewed. Revised estimates indicate that a few times 10 to the 13th bits should suffice to specify genetic information, neuronal interconnections and memory, and process or initialization information. By using published performance parameters of the Cyclops interstellar communications system, range estimates are made for efficiently coded matter transmitter messages. Ranges of hundreds to thousands of light years are found for reasonable transmitting times. Although the implied data compression far exceeds current capabilities, the transmission of efficiently coded matter transmitter messages across interstellar space appears feasible in principle. Matter transmitters deployed elsewhere in the Galaxy could provide new objects in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
