A new mechanism for the generation of Jupiter's S-emission is proposed which explains the upper limit of the frequency spectrum, the conelike radiation pattern, and the maximum values of the emission flux density. According to this mechanism the radio emission is produced by an electron beam moving along the Io current tube through the inhomogeneous ionosphere of the planet, the emission frequency being close to the local upper hybrid frequency. Variations of the radiation pattern and the maximum frequencies with changes in the Jovigraphic longitude of the source can also be explained.
