Available experimental data on the night-time E region are used in an attempt to analyze physical processes in the twilight and night-time ionosphere at middle latitudes. The examined data pertain to electron-density variations at heights of 100 to 200 km during the night, the ion composition of the night-time ionosphere, night-time ionization sources for the E region, and the role of dynamic processes in forming the irregular structure of the night-time ionosphere. The paucity of experimental data on these areas is emphasized, and some problems which remain to be solved are considered.
