The wind dynamo theory of Sq magnetic variations and of ionospheric currents and fields is examined. It is concluded that winds in the ionospheric dynamo region (80-200 km) are capable of explaining Sq currents. Ionospheric winds can probably also explain observed middle and low latitude electric fields. The primary source of Sq currents is the diurnal winds in the upper E and F1 regions which are driven by solar heating. The primary cause of electric field variability on quiet days is probably variable winds in the E region. Magnetospheric sources are of secondary importance for quiet day ionospheric currents and electric fields at middle and low latitudes.
