The rupture process of a large deep-focus earthquake of September 29, 1973, at a depth of 575 km beneath Vladivostok, U.S.S.R., is investigated mainly on the basis of the long-period seismograms of WWSSN. The analysis of P waves reveal the following features. The fracture of the earthquake occurred in a form of multiple-shock activity. The initial breakage was succeeded by two larger events located very close to one of the nodal planes of the initial event. All three focal mechanisms were similar. The total seismic moment of 6.60 . 1027 dyn cm obtained from long-period P waveforms is consistent with 5.2 . 1027 dyn cm obtained from amplitude spectra of mantle Rayleigh waves at 200 s.
