In the classification of planetary magnetospheres according to the mutual relations among the planet rotation vector, the planet dipole moment, and the velocity vector of the solar wind, the Type 3 magnetosphere is one where the rotation vector is perpendicular to both the dipole moment and the solar wind velocity vector. In the present paper it is proposed that the earth's magnetosphere changed frequently to Type 3 in the past during polarity transitions. Relations among the Type 3 palaeomagnetosphere, the earth's palaeoclimate, magnetic variable stars, pulsars, and the heliomagnetosphere during polarity reversals are discussed.
