The paper describes the principal features of planetary magnetospheres, giving attention to that of the earth as the best known and the most balanced, that of Jupiter, representing a rotation-dominated macromagnetosphere, and that of Mercury, an irrotational minimagnetosphere. Sketches are drawn of the plasma and magnetic field configuration of the terrestrial magnetosphere under quiet solar wind conditions and during the development of a magnetospheric substorm, and the major regions and field configurations of the Jovian and Hermean magnetospheres.
