Analysis of the change in a satellite's orbital inclination can reveal the strength of zonal and meridional winds; but it is only rarely that a satellite with perigee as low as 150 km remains long enough in orbit to give a measurable change in inclination. The satellite 1973-101 A presented an opportunity to determine winds at a height of 165 km from analysis of its orbit during one of the phases when it was not being maneuvered. Theoretical curves for zonal and meridional winds have been fitted to 70 values of inclination for 1973-101 A between December 21, 1973, and March 4, 1974. It is found that there are strong west-to-east winds (of order 130 m/s) in the evening (17-22 h) and east-to-west winds in the morning (08-12 h). Between 12 and 17 h the effects of meridional winds are large, and the zonal winds cannot be accurately determined.
