The 18O(3He, d)19F reaction has been used to determine if a presumed sub-threshold resonance at Ec.m. = -94 keV in the 18O(p, α)15N reaction exists at an astrophysically significant level. No evidence for this state was observed which implies a dimensionless reduced width θ2p < 5 × 10-5. In addition, a proton width Γp = 2 × 10-19eV has been determined for a d-wave resonance located at Ec.m. = 20 keV. The resulting thermonuclear reaction rate is slow enough to ensure that 18O is not destroyed at red-giant temperatures.
