Ultraviolet spectra of the stars exciting two very low excitation compact nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud have been obtained with the IUE. The ultraviolet colours match those of lightly reddened B2 - B3 stars of luminosity classes III - V. There is little evidence of extensive mass loss sufficient to form the surrounding nebulae: it is also found that the very low excitation nebulae do not form a homogeneous class of object.
