The combination of the UV P Cygni line profile of C IV and the IR excess allows the determination of the mass loss rate and the mean ionization fraction of C IV. The values are very dependent on the velocity parameter β. Assuming β ≈ 4, the mass loss rate and ionization fraction are fitted against stellar parameters. If the theory of radiatively driven winds is correct, large differences must exist between the velocity laws of different stars.
