The description of charge density in terms of electron momentum distribution, and its study by Compton scattering are reviewed from a historical perspective. Attention is given to the behavior of electron momentum in quantum systems; the conditions for interpreting the results of Compton scattering experiments in terms of electron momentum density; and some experimental applications using gamma-rays, X-rays and electron beams. Recent experimental results concerning insulators and conductors are presented, and the extent to which they challenge the conventional assumptions of band theory is critically evaluated.
