Statistical ray tracing represents a method which describes the random behavior of light rays in a plasma in terms of the statistical properties of the random electron density component. The paper is primarily concerned with laser-produced plasmas. However, the described work is also applicable to wave propagation in random media in other physical contexts. It is pointed out that an important result of this work is the extension of statistical ray-tracing techniques to problems where the nonrandom 'background' density component is inhomogeneous. Attention is given to the statistical ray-tracing theory, the solution of an illustrative problem, and statistical and Monte Carlo results for the illustrative problem. In the reported work, statistical ray-tracing techniques have been extended to strongly refracting plasmas.
