The liquid GRIN mirror is examined in detail, and relations are derived for computing the profiles of chemical concentration and index of refraction as a function of radius in a liquid GRIN mirror, assuming that they are caused by diffusion alone. Results show that it is possible to obtain good-quality mirrors with existing liquids if material flows are uniquely due to diffusion. Turbulent convection is found to render the mirror totally useless if only two liquids are used. Elimination of the density gradient which drives the convection is proposed as a solution to the problem. A ternary mixture of liquids with appropriate densities and indices of refraction is proposed in order to give a gradient of refraction index in a uniform density liquid.
