Recent attempts to detect brown dwarfs are discussed. A program of
observation of the closest Southern Hemisphere stars with the infrared
speckle system at the La Silla 3.6 m telescope is emphasized. Ongoing
development of infrared observational techniques in order to detect the
dim light of a brown dwarf near a luminous star is examined.
