The role of initial crater geometry in determining the characteristics of the Imbrium mascon anomaly is investigated. A model is constructed in which a fresh impact crater is allowed to attain isostatic equilibrium before being partially flooded with basaltic lava. The resulting gravity anomaly is found to be a sensitive function of both the depth of basaltic fill material and the depth excavated by the original impact crater. It is found that only craters excavating approximately to the base of the crust provide a good match to the observed gravity anomaly. Within the range 50-100 km, this result appears to be approximately independent of the actual thickness assumed for the lunar crust. This is much shallower than would be expected by extrapolation from small-scale cratering events.
