Introductions to general relativity at the popular and undergraduate levels generally emphasize the notion of curved spacetime but pay scant attention to the Einstein equation, because the latter is thought to be impossible to understand without vast amounts of tensor calculus. We present a simple formulation of the Einstein equation that is completely rigorous and tensor-free. This formulation can be understood with only calculus and elementary physics.
