A short observation of the black-hole binary and jet source GRS 1915+105 with XMM-Newton shows evidence of a relativistic broad line at ~7 keV, but the same line is significantly absent in a second observation with the source in the same spectral state (temperature and radius of the accretion disk). During both observations GRS 1915+105 is relatively steady. A photoionized absorber, similar to the one observed with Chandra (Lee et al. 2002), fits both observations (Mendez et al. 2005). We propose to observe GRS 1915+105 with the HETGS/CC-mode 3 times 20 ks in AO7. Given the source long-term variability, these observations will most likely sample more than one spectral state; we will address the reality of the broad line in view of the presence of photoionized plasma in absorption.
