Scientific paper

Photometric images of the whole solar disk are obtained on a daily basis at the San Fernando Observatory. Red images obtained at 672 nm are used to determine total and umbral areas as well as photometric quantities. New software (Preminger, Walton and Chapman, 2001) permits a search for features by size and location. We will present results of separately comparing sunspot areas for the northern and southern hemisphere for the past two solar cycles using data from the smaller photometric telescope (CFDT1) which has pixels of approximately 5" x 5". This research has been partially supported by NSF (ATM-9912132) and NASA (NAG5-7191). Reference Preminger, D.G., Walton, S.R. and Chapman, G.A. 2001 submitted to Solar Phys.
