Low altitude observations of precipitating ions are used to infer the degree of magnetotail stretching using the b2i boundary, a proxy for the ion isotropy boundary. A new robust algorithm is used to calculate a magnetotail stretching index from DMSP observations for the period 1984 through present. The behavior of this index is examined both statistically and for individual events. Characteristic time scales, correlation with solar wind variables, and evolution during geomagnetic storms will be presented. This index will be made available to the community.
