The spectral-differential analysis (SDA) technique is applied to calculate the magnetosheath flow as a function of ion energies. The technique is based on the concept of a non-streaming frame in which the first-order anisotropy of ions is absent. In the non-streaming frame, macroscopic plasma parameters such as ion density and temperature of different ion components can be calculated. The SDA technique has been successfully tested through simulations. It is then used to analyze the magnetosheath data obtained by the AMPTE/UKS spacecraft downstream of a quasi-perpendicular bow shock when the solar wind flow was supercritical. It is found that below 10 keV proton energy two distinct proton components are present in the magnetosheath plasma. The high-energy component, with a flow speed of ~ 300 km s-1 and a mean temperature of ~ 800 eV, is well known to result from specular reflections at the bow shock, where the reflected ions can gain sufficient energy in the solar wind to penetrate the shock potential barrier as they execute their gyration motions and be transmitted downstream [Sckopke et al., 1983]. The low-energy component may be explained by direct transmission of solar wind ions through the bow shock. These ions are then rapidly scattered and heated by strong electromagnetic fluctuations in the downstream region. Our analysis shows that the low-energy component has a flow speed of ~ 100 kms-1 and a mean temperature of ~ 200 eV. In this paper, we will present the SDA results and compare them with those obtained by the traditional moment method. Sckopke, N., G. Paschmann, S. J. Bame, J. T. Gosling, and C. T. Russel, Evolution of ion distributions across the nearly perpendicular bow shock: Specularly and non-specularly reflected-gynating ions, J. Geophys. Res., 88, 6121-6136, 1983.
