Recent work has shown that the effect of narrowband cyclotron-resonant VLF waves on a trapped particle can accumulate linearly with time, which is much faster than the usual diffusive √ {t} scaling. It has also been shown that for the particle energy to increase, in a dipole-like configuration the wavevector must be directed towards the equator, which is unusual but not impossible. Here, we discuss this scenario and examine how fast and how high the energy can increase, for different particle and wave parameters. An assessment is made of the plausiblity of this mechanism for storm-time energization of outer zone electrons.
