We analyze effects at ion gyrofrequency harmonics observed on the Polar and Injun-5 spacecraft. We report observations of electromagnetic waves near the fundamental and the first few harmonics of the local proton gyrofrequency. These emissions are observed in the auroral region near the perigee at an altitude of 1 Re. Analysis of magnetic field fluctuations shows that they are always polarized perpendicular to the DC field. Based on these observations we further investigate their mode of propagation in the hot plasma. Auroral hiss emissions often simultaneously propagate at higher frequencies. They sometimes also carry a measurable magnetic component which demonstrates attenuation bands near higher proton gyrofrequency harmonics.
