The Martian magnetic pileup boundary is a feature resulting from the solar wind flow around Mars. The presence of regions of strong crustal magnetization in the southern hemisphere of Mars make Mars a hemispherically asymmetric obstacle to the solar wind flow. On average, Mars appears larger to the solar wind flow by several hundred km in the southern hemisphere than in the northern hemisphere. We analyze the latitude dependence of the magnetic pileup boundary altitude using Mars Global Surveyor and Phobos 2 data. We find that south of 10° N latitude, the magnetic pileup boundary altitude is a function of planetary latitude and solar zenith angle with high statistical significance. Focusing on the region near the terminator, we find an increasing trend in the altitude of the magnetic pileup boundary with decreasing N. latitude is observed across the span of 10°N to 40°S latitude. The slope of the trend is a function of solar zenith angle such that the range of altitudes due to latitude increases at higher solar zenith angles. Due to the limited spacecraft latitude coverage at the MPB altitudes, the MPB has never been crossed at high southern latitudes. Therefore, the effects of the strongest crustal fields have not been directly observed.
