We examine the coupling processes of solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere/thermosphere using a simple one-dimension model along the magnetic field from the magnetopause to the ionosphere. Ion-neutral collisions in the ionosphere/thermosphere are included. The system is inactive before t=0. At t=0, a tangential electric field and a normal magnetic field are introduced at the magnetopause boundary associated with reconnection that is taking place at the magnetopause. The driving mechanisms, the tangential electric field and normal magnetic field at the magnetopause boundary, remain unchanged afterward. This models a magnetosphere-ionosphere system driven by the solar wind. We analyze the time dependent processes described by Faraday's law, Ampere's law, generalized Ohm's law and plasma momentum equation. We study the propagation of changes in all the quantities between the magnetopause and the ionosphere, identify the relevant time scales, and describe the approach to the eventual steady state convection.
