The observation of the oldest stars gives evidence on events which took
place at epochs as early as z ≅ 5 to 10. This evidence is
summarized and possible interpretations are discussed. One of them is
that the old population II is of extragalactic origin and was accreted
by the Galaxy when it became an isolated system.
