The CIS CODIF experiments on CLUSTER measure ion composition over the energy range 20 eV/e to 40 keV/e. When the CLUSTER spacecraft cross the magnetopause, the CIS experiments often observe energetic magnetospheric ions, particularly O+, in the magnetosheath. These ions tend to be constrained to a layer close to the magnetopause boundary. We will compare the energetic ions observed under a variety of magnetosheath magnetic field configurations. We will determine under which conditions the ions most easily cross the magnetopause, and how far they penetrate into the magnetosheath.
