Observations from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS) on ACE have shown that above 10 MeV/nucleon, the composition of solar energetic particle (SEP) events varies substantially from event to event. Most of the large SEP events of 1997 and 1998 were iron-rich, with Fe/O abundances up to 10 times that typical of the solar corona. In contrast, many of the SEP events in 1999 and 2000 had Fe/O ratios similar to that of the corona. The variability of rare elements in SEP events is hard to determine and their abundances have primarily been obtained by averaging over large numbers of SEP events. Using data from the SIS we present the relative abundances of rare elements such as P, Cl, K, Ti, Mn, Cr, Co, Cu and Zn for the Fe-rich SEP events combined and compare them to those obtained from combining the remaining SEP events. This provides some insight into the variability of these rare elements over the range of 20-100 MeV/nucleon. We will discuss interpretations of these results in terms of charge-to-mass and first-ionization-potential fractionation processes.
