The signal-to-noise-ratio degradation due to the neglect of the relativistic periastron advance in matched-filter detection of gravitational wave chirps emitted from coalescing binary stars is computed. The result shows quite dramatically the relevance of this effect, as well as its dependence on the total mass and mass ratio of the companion stars.
