In-situ solar wind composition observations in concert with magnetic field, plasma and energetic particle observations place strong constraints on the origin of solar wind and the structural origin of the heliospheric magnetic field. We outline these constraints and those imposed by remote solar observations, thereby deriving the requirements of a dynamic field model for the description of the structure and evolution of the open magnetic field that originates in the photosphere and extends throughout the heliosphere. This model provides a necessary link that allows the heliospheric magnetic field structure and solar wind energy source to be derived from processes ongoing in the photosphere and low corona. Initial results of the model will also be discussed.
