On the basis of the Ruderman-Sutherland model of particle acceleration near the surface of a pulsar, the nonthermal X rays emitted by the extended source 2U 0832-45 surrounding the Vela pulsar are attributable to synchrotron radiation by particles ejected from the pulsar. It is noted that as the particles stream out of the pulsar magnetosphere they have the capability of generating gamma rays by the curvature mechanism; in this case the emission should have parameters similar to those observed for PSR 0833-45.
