The interplanetary magnetic field has its origin in open field regions of the Sun (coronal holes). The locations of these regions and their total open flux can be determined from current-free extrapolations of the measured photospheric field. We derive the long-term variation of the open flux during 1971-2000 and discuss its causes. We also discuss the physical relationship between active regions, transport processes (differential rotation, supergranular diffusion, meridional flow), and the evolution of open and closed fields on the Sun.
