The detection by BeppoSAX of afterglows from gamma-ray bursts has
immensely boosted the subject. This paper outlines the class of model
for the bursts that currently seems most promising, and addresses
specifically the nature of the afterglow, and its importance as a probe
of the burst phenomenon.
