The paper considers the near ultraviolet spectra of a group of early-type stars with Balmer emission. Some absorption features in B stars in this region are recognizable as criteria for assigning luminosity class; in the same region, the characteristics displayed by Be stars suggest higher luminosities than in the photographic region. It is suggested that Fe II 2538-2548 A should be useful for investigating the outer layers of stellar atmospheres. It was concluded that: (1) stars only with H-alpha in emission belong to photographic luminosity classes V-IV; (2) stars with more conspicuous emission belong to V-IV or III photographic luminosity class, while the III or higher classes are suggested for the 2000 A region; and (3) the difference in luminosity between the photographic and the 2000 A regions is correlated with the steepness of the Balmer decrement.
