Energetic particle data from the DMSP F6 and F7 satellites are used to investigate global features of particle precipitation and field-aligned electron acceleration during isolated substorms. Both the AU and AL indices and low-altitude Pi 2 magnetic pulsations are employed to determine the onset time and the recovery phase of each isolated substorm. In the 1-hr interval before substorm onset, there is a clear boundary between the regions of the accelerated electron precipitation events (type 1 events) and of the cental plasma sheet (CPS) type unstructured electron precipitation events (type 2 events) for almost all local times. In the recovery phase of substorms, the poleward edge of the type 2 event region expands to latitudes higher than 72 deg around midnight. The magnetospheric source region of the type 2 events expands toward the magnetotail or toward the higher-latitude region after substorm onset.
